Bird Netting

Bird netting is a very low tech solution that works best for preventing birds accessing areas of roofs and building nests. Netting is the most suitable option for covering large spaces, but it is important to bear in mind that the size of the gaps in netting are specific to only one type of bird, so this is only a solution for properties where only one pest is present.

Requires regular maintenance
Potential for birds to become trapped behind the netting if not installed or maintained properly.

Bird Spikes

Bird spikes may look dangerous and harmful to birds, but they are simply designed to stop birds attempting to land on a surface. Most birds realise the potential threat in front of them and avoid the surface. This method is great for urban areas with heavy infestations of birds such as pigeons and seagulls.

The spikes can gather feathers and droppings which can be unhygienic.

Bird wire is a discreet, almost invisible deterrent that prevents birds from landing on ledges. This method can be used as a replacement for spikes.

If the bird doesn’t see the wire and flies straight into it, it can severely hurt or even decapitate its legs
Birds with long legs can learn to step over the wire
If the ledge is wide enough, the birds can fit in against the wall, behind your deterrent.

Avishock

This system works by issuing a small electric shock to the bird when it comes in to contact with the system. This does not physically harm the bird (Avishock is even approved and recommended by several animal rights groups!), but it does create a psychological barrier through negative association, that will prevent the bird from wanting to land on your property again.

Bird-Repellent Gels

There are two types of repellent gels: those with active ingredients and those without.

Gels without active ingredients have a sticky consistency that birds dislike as it restricts their ability to move freely. This prevents the birds wanting to land there again.

Gels with active ingredients have the added feature of utilizing UV light to make the birds believe the building is on fire. Birds can see through the UV spectrum, so where humans would see an orange gel, birds would see a fire that would scare them away.

In addition to this, scents that are distasteful to birds can be added to act as negative stimuli and encourage the bird to go somewhere more suitable.
