Who Can Remove Pests from My Property in Brentwood?
Across the UK, many homeowners and renters can rely on the services of their local council to help with certain pest control issues at a small charge. Unfortunately for the residents of Brentwood, Brentwood Borough Council no longer offers this service. If you’re in need of pest control in this area you might be left asking yourself who can be trusted to remove the pests from your property. Not to worry; Pest Defence are here with all the advice and information you need to deal with your pest problem.
Whose responsibility?
Accounting for responsibility is the first step to tackle a pest infestation, and if you are the property owner, the responsibility is solely yours, so go about finding the right pest removal company as soon as you can.
If your property is rented, the issue can be more complex. In general, any infestation that was present in the property before a lease commenced should be dealt with by the property owner, whereas an infestation that came about during the tenancy as a result of an unhygienic environment or an exposed food source is the tenant’s responsibility.
If an infestation began during a tenancy, but was caused by structural damage to the building that allowed pests to gain easy access to the property, the responsibility can be attributed to the landlord.
If the property owner and tenant disagree on the cause of an infestation, an Environmental Health Officer can be called in to inspect the scene and apportion responsibility.
When dealing with a council property, an infestation that has resulted due to negligence is the tenant’s responsibility, and the council are not only under no obligation to deal with the pest removal, they can issue a warning or even an eviction notice to the tenants.
Brentwood Borough Council’s statement
Brentwood Borough Council previously offered a limited pest control service for commercial and domestic clients at a small price, but have since decided to retire their services. In their statement, the Council specify that although they no longer offer pest control services, they may take enforcement action if rats are nesting in a premises under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949. This should not be viewed as a solution to your rat infestation however, and should only be considered as a very last resort.
The Council state that there are still many reputable firms throughout the area capable of tackling infestations that can be located in many directories, but the Council in no way offer direct recommendations for any of the contractors listed, or can comment on the quality of their work.
Choosing the best pest removal service
As Brentwood Borough Council no longer offer a pest removal service, you will need to employ the services of pest control specialists. This is actually a much better option than utilising a council service anyway, as specialists in the industry will have more knowledge and a wider selection of tools to deal with your infestation, completing a full extermination quickly and proficiently.

- Accreditations
